Intensity-Based Object Extraction from 3D Medical Images Including a Correction of Partial Volume Errors

چکیده
Feature extraction by applying a threshold window to image intensity values is a simple and common image processing technique. We consider the case of 3D images where intensity based feature extraction is used to determine the volume of objects of interest. We show that the accuracy of volume determination is limited by partial volume (PV) effects. We outline a new method for correcting for PV effects based on object geometry and object intensity. Although this PV correction has been developed with respect to a specific application in magnetic resonance imaging, it is applicable to volume extraction by thresholding in any image and can possibly be extended to other intensity-based extraction techniques.

متن کاملAutomatic Road Detection and Extraction From MultiSpectral Images Using a New Hierarchical Object-based Method
Road detection and Extraction is one of the most important issues in photogrammetry, remote sensing and machine vision. A great deal of research has been done in this area based on multispectral images, which are mostly relatively good results. In this paper, a novel automated and hierarchical object-based method for detecting and extracting of roads is proposed. This research is based on the M...
متن کاملContour Based 3D Biological Image Reconstruction and Partial Retrieval
Image segmentation is one of the most difficult tasks in image processing. Segmentation algorithms are generally based on searching a region where pixels share similar gray level intensity and satisfy a set of defined criteria. However, the segmented region cannot be used directly for partial image retrieval. In this dissertation, a Contour Based Image Structure (CBIS) model is introduced. In t...
متن کاملComparison of state-of-the-art atlas-based bone segmentation approaches from brain MR images for MR-only radiation planning and PET/MR attenuation correction
Introduction: Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging has emerged as a valuable tool in radiation treatment (RT) planning as well as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging owing to its superior soft-tissue contrast. Due to the fact that there is no direct transformation from voxel intensity in MR images into electron density, itchr('39')s crucial to generate a pseudo-CT (Computed Tomography) image ...
متن کاملObject-Oriented Method for Automatic Extraction of Road from High Resolution Satellite Images
As the information carried in a high spatial resolution image is not represented by single pixels but by meaningful image objects, which include the association of multiple pixels and their mutual relations, the object based method has become one of the most commonly used strategies for the processing of high resolution imagery. This processing comprises two fundamental and critical steps towar...
